Miguel Baron, a pharmacy owner, was arrested at the airport as he tried to board a one-way flight out of the country. He was one of 455 people charged in the Justice Department's June 2026 national health care fraud takedown. In October, prosecutors announced a 24-count grand jury indictment accusing him of taking more than $31 million from Medicaid and a state program that pays for HIV medicine.
Prosecutors say Baron used his two pharmacies to pay Medicaid patients $150 to $250 in cash to fill their prescriptions. They say patients sold their sealed HIV medicine back for a few hundred dollars, and the same bottles went back on the shelf to be billed again. According to the complaint, the pharmacies billed for 481,839 HIV pills but bought only 312,939 from legitimate suppliers. Prosecutors say the money moved through shell companies into luxury waterfront condos, a Mercedes-Benz, a Lexus, and tickets to 2026 World Cup games.
